Like many grantwriters, I did not originally set out to become one. I wanted to be a museum curator. But as luck would have it, I was fortunate enough to find my true calling during my first internship as a college sophomore.<\/p>\n

My supervisor\u2019s name was Maggie. To this day, she is still the most intensely glamorous woman and one of the best fundraisers I have ever known. Maggie showed me the value of crafting a grant application that spoke to the essence of what a funder was looking for. She taught me the ins and outs of letters of inquiry and how to identify closely aligned prospects.<\/p>\n

But more than teaching me valuable skills that I still use today, Maggie was a mentor to me. She answered my questions and took time to thoroughly explain new tasks. She gave me space to make mistakes and learn from them. Her edits on my rough drafts honed my personal voice and the quality of my prose. It was clear that she believed in my work and cared about cultivating my skills. Maggie is the reason I am a grantwriter today.<\/p>\n

I feel lucky to have the opportunity to carry on her work today as I mentor interns who are starting their professional journeys. I instill in them the lessons Maggie taught me, while sharing insights from my own experiences as well. By continuing to cultivate the next generation of grantwriters and nonprofit professionals, I honor Maggie\u2019s legacy while establishing my own.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The benefits of internships \u2013 both paid and unpaid \u2013 for young professionals are widely acknowledged. According to Forbes, \u201cInterns are almost 25% more likely than non-interns to start a full-time position within 6 months of graduation.\u201d\u00a0 Internships offer students and young professionals an advantage over peers who graduate without this experience. With many entry-level positions now requiring prior experience, internships are a great way to offer young professionals the skills and credentials needed to stand out. At the same time, organizations benefit from the fresh perspectives and energy interns bring.<\/p>\n

But internships are more than resume boosters. For seasoned professionals, internships can be a rewarding opportunity to offer their experience and time as mentors.<\/p>\n

However, mentoring goes beyond simply teaching. Mentorship is founded in a supervisor\u2019s ability to spend time and attention on their intern\u2019s current and future goals. A mentor provides actionable feedback on tasks. They take time to understand the intern\u2019s goals for their internship, versus simply doling out tasks to lighten their own workload. Mentors cultivate not only the young professional, but the young adult as well, who is coming into their own, both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n

I know from experience that it can be difficult to know where to start when becoming a mentor. Over the years, I\u2019ve found several practices that make the mentoring experience more meaningful for both interns and supervisors. Here are seven ways to be a better mentor to your intern:<\/p>\n

Ask About Accommodations<\/h2>\n

Students and employees enjoy the right to reasonable accommodation in the classroom and workplace. Your interns also have the right to reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Many interns may be nervous to disclose that they need accommodations, so ask them about it openly and kindly in your first meeting. If an intern requests an accommodation, work together to create a plan, and don\u2019t hesitate to reach out to your Human Resources office for guidance.<\/p>\n

Set Expectations Early<\/h2>\n

Interns are often full-time students, have full- or part-time jobs, and may have significant family obligations outside of work and school. Be clear with your expectations and deadlines in advance so you and your intern can plan ahead. Do not expect your interns to be able to accommodate last minute tasks like your paid staff can.<\/p>\n

Stay mindful of exam weeks and academic breaks \u2013 interns deserve time to focus on their studies and take breaks like the rest of their peers.<\/p>\n

Dedicate Time to Your Interns<\/h2>\n

Plan to spend at least two to three hours per week with your intern. This includes meetings and reviewing their work. I believe that intentional participation with your intern makes all the difference in the quality of their work and the experience they have during the internship. Your intern is there to learn and grow as a young professional, not make your own task load lighter.<\/p>\n

Teach, Don\u2019t Delegate<\/h2>\n

Too many times, interns are delegated to completing mundane tasks within an organization. Provide your intern with tasks that will teach them the foundational skills of your work, or provide them with a deeper understanding of your organization\/industry. Secondly, do not assign work to interns that should be completed by a paid staff member. The work produced by interns is their first try based on the training you have provided. Because they are in the learning stage, their work will often need corrections and feedback to make it polished enough for use by your nonprofit.<\/p>\n

To prevent creating assignments for them that are completely separate from your current workload, I recommend giving interns old tasks that have already been completed. This will allow interns to try out their new skills on a task that doesn\u2019t need to go \u201clive.\u201d It decreases the pressure on them to get it right on the first try and opens an opportunity for you both to review the assignment and discuss feedback. Interns can also compare their work to the finished product of the original assignment. This will allow your intern to reflect on how they want to improve their future work.<\/p>\n

Provide Tangible Takeaways<\/h2>\n

Many entry-level positions, especially grant writing positions, require multiple writing samples as part of the application process. Your intern\u2019s career prospects will be strengthened if they can produce polished writing samples that are applicable to the job they are applying for. By creating assignments that can turn into portfolio pieces for your interns, you are dramatically increasing your intern\u2019s chances of landing their dream job after graduation.<\/p>\n

I have known this to be true for my own interns. I ask all my interns to complete a mock Letter of Inquiry, full grant application, and grant report as part of their internship coursework. We review and edit the assignments together so they are ready to be used in a future job search. One of my past interns told me that her new boss remarked that her writing samples were a standout part of her application and helped her secure her new position.<\/p>\n

Let Interns Explore and Ask Questions<\/h2>\n

Interns should be allowed to explore all options for their future employment. Work with your team members, even those in different departments, to see who would be open to providing informational interviews with your intern.<\/p>\n

Let interns know that you will provide honest feedback and transparent communication and that you expect the same from them. Your intern should feel comfortable asking questions about assignments and nonprofit work in general. You cannot help your interns, accommodate them, or provide extra instruction if they do not communicate that they are struggling or falling behind.<\/p>\n

At the end of the internship, remember to ask your intern for their feedback on your performance as a mentor\/supervisor \u2013 it\u2019s a valuable learning experience for you, too.<\/p>\n

Be Available After the Internship Ends<\/h2>\n

It is imperative that you open the door to future communications with your intern after the internship ends. If you are comfortable, provide your intern with your personal contact details, so they can stay in touch after the internship ends, even if you leave your current organization. Offer to follow each other on LinkedIn to stay connected.<\/p>\n

Young professionals are always in need of a letter of recommendation or someone to use as a reference in a future job search. You may also consider drafting a one-page letter of recommendation that your intern can keep on file for their future use.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, extend the offer that they can contact you in the future, no matter how much time has passed. Interns get busy as they move on with their lives, studies, and careers after an internship ends. After a long stretch of time has passed, interns may feel that it would be awkward for them to reach back out to you. If you are willing, let them know that you would still be happy to hear from them at any point in the future.<\/p>\n

An internship is a mutual commitment between you and your intern to the future of the nonprofit sector. The next generation of grantwriters and nonprofit professionals cannot rise to the many challenges facing our industry today without the guidance and mentorship of seasoned professionals. When Maggie chose to mentor me, she wasn\u2019t just cultivating my skills as a grantwriter \u2013 she was also investing in the future of the nonprofit sector as a whole.\u00a0 Ten years later, I am proud to carry on her legacy by mentoring my own interns.<\/p>\n

When considering your role as a mentor, I challenge you to consider the mentors who have helped you get to where you are today, personally and professionally. The goal is to be the mentor you wish you\u2019d had, or model yourself after the one who inspired you most. Ask yourself: What do I want my intern to take away from this experience? What skills do I want them to learn? What do I wish I\u2019d known starting out?<\/p>\n

By mentoring with intention, you not only nurture the next generation \u2013 you establish your own legacy as someone who helped others succeed.<\/p>\n
